About this coinHistory

Proof production jumped to approximately 1,000 coins in 1870, one of the higher figures of the early 1870s. The increase reflected growing collector demand and the Mint's willingness to scale output to meet it. The proof set went out during the same year the Fifteenth Amendment was ratified and Hiram Revels became the first Black man to serve in the United States Senate. The 1870 proof is among the more available early-series proofs and remains within reach of collectors building a complete set.
