Philadelphia delivered approximately 960 proof three-cent nickels in 1871. Proof production remained strong through the early 1870s even as circulation strike mintages were declining. The 1871 proof is a standard entry in the annual sequence. Subscribers received their sets the same year fire tore through Chicago in October and destroyed nearly a third of the city.
