The 1863 3 Over 2 proof three-cent silver is an overdate variety struck from a die originally prepared for 1862 and modified by overpunching the final digit. Traces of the underlying 2 are visible on the 3, most clearly on the lower portion of the 3's serif extending to the middle of the digit. NGC classifies the variety as a technical restrike, apparently produced in 1864 rather than in 1863 itself, using the modified die well after the calendar year ended.
The variety is extremely rare. Estimates place the total surviving population at no more than 30 to 50 coins across all grades. A PR65 example sold at Heritage in January 2013 for $15,275, and higher grades have commanded stronger figures. The 1863 3 Over 2 is one of three documented overdates in the entire trime series (alongside the 1862/1 circulation strike and the 1869/8, which exists in both formats), and its restrike status adds a further layer of historical interest.
