Philadelphia produced about 460 proofs for 1863. Proof output relative to the 21,000-coin circulation mintage marked a turning point: surviving proofs would soon outnumber high-grade business strikes on the collector market, a reversal of the usual relationship between the two formats. From 1863 onward, proof trimes would typically lead the way in collector availability, the opposite of the pattern for most earlier American silver coinage.
