About this coinHistory

The 1865 proof two-cent piece was struck in a mintage of approximately 500 coins, a significant increase from 1864. The collector market for the new denomination had been established, and the Mint responded with larger proof production to meet demand. The 1865 proof is one of the more available early proof two-cent pieces as a result, though "available" is relative for a nineteenth-century proof bronze coin.

Surviving examples show the bronze composition in its sharpest form, with mirrored fields and clearly defined devices. Color preservation varies. Fully red proofs command significant premiums over red-brown or brown examples, and the difference is visible enough to justify careful examination of any coin before purchase.
