About this coinHistory

The 1866 proof two-cent piece was produced in a mintage of approximately 725 coins. The higher proof output, combined with the falling circulation strike production, marked a turning point in the denomination's character. The proofs were increasingly becoming the main reason the two-cent piece continued to be made, as the commercial role of the coin diminished. Proof collectors kept the series alive long after commerce had moved on.
