Mercury Dimes

The Mercury dime entered production in late 1916 from all three active mints. The 1916-D, struck at Denver with a mintage of just 264,000 pieces, was immediately recognized as scarce and has been the key date of the series from the day it was issued. The Philadelphia and San Francisco 1916 dimes were produced in more substantial quantities and are not rare, but the Denver issue created a first-year rarity that has dominated the series ever since. Counterfeits of the 1916-D are common, many of them created by adding a D mintmark to a genuine 1916 Philadelphia coin, and authentication is essential for any example that has not been professionally graded.

Production ran from 1916 through 1945, thirty years that covered both world wars and the Great Depression. Annual mintages swung wildly depending on economic conditions. The roaring twenties pushed output above 20 million for some mint-date combinations, while the Depression years saw mintages drop into the low millions. San Francisco and Denver issues from the early 1930s are consistently scarcer than Philadelphia coins of the same period, and several branch-mint dates from 1931 and 1932 are semi-keys that collectors find difficult in higher grades. The Mint struck no dimes at Denver or San Francisco in 1932, and Philadelphia's output that year was a modest 4.5 million, the lowest for any regular-issue Philadelphia Mercury dime.

The coin's composition remained 90% silver and 10% copper throughout the run, at 2.50 grams and 17.9 millimeters. Unlike the nickel denomination, which switched to a silver-bearing wartime alloy, the dime kept its standard composition through World War II. Silver dimes did disappear from circulation during the war years to some extent, hoarded as always when economic uncertainty made people nervous, but not to the degree that had emptied pockets during the Civil War. The economy was better managed by the 1940s, and the public had more confidence in the government's ability to maintain the currency.

The most famous variety in the series is the 1942/1 overdate, which exists from both Philadelphia and Denver. A 1942-dated die was punched over a 1941-dated hub, leaving the underlying 1 clearly visible beneath the 2. The Philadelphia version is scarcer than the Denver, and both command significant premiums. Bowers notes that the overdates were likely created by accident during routine die preparation, with a 1941-dated working hub used to impress a die that was then corrected with a 1942 hub. The result is dramatic enough to see without magnification on well-preserved examples, and the variety has been collected since at least the 1950s.

The 1921 and 1921-D are the other scarce dates that give collectors trouble. Both had low mintages, 1.08 million for Philadelphia and 1.08 million for Denver, and they entered circulation during a mild recession that meant fewer were saved. Finding either date in anything above Fine requires patience, and mint-state examples are genuinely rare. The 1926-S is another recognized semi-key, struck in reasonable quantity but notoriously poorly made, with many examples showing weak strikes that make grading difficult. Full Bands designation, referring to whether the horizontal bands on the fasces are fully separated, has become an important grading distinction for the series, and some dates that are common in ordinary mint state become genuinely scarce when the Full Bands criterion is applied. The 1945 micro S variety, with an abnormally small S mintmark, rounds out the list of varieties that attract widespread attention.

Proofs were struck from 1936 through 1942, the years when the Mint resumed proof production after a hiatus that had lasted since 1916. Proof mintages ranged from about 4,100 in 1936 up to 22,300 in 1942, modest numbers by later standards but enough to supply the collector market of the era. The proofs are sharply struck, beautifully detailed coins that show Weinman's design at its best. They are among the most popular proof coins in the entire U.S. series.

A dime during the Mercury era still bought something real, though inflation was steadily eroding what that something was. In 1916, ten cents covered a loaf of bread, a quart of milk, a newspaper, or a phone call. By 1945, prices had risen enough that the dime's purchasing power had slipped, but it was still a working coin that people spent without hesitation every day. Dimes fed parking meters, paid for phone calls at drugstore booths, bought candy bars and sodas, and accumulated in jars and drawers across the country. The Mercury dime circulated alongside Barber dimes that were still in the money supply, and older people in the 1930s and 1940s would have handled both types regularly. The coins wore down in service, as silver always does, but Weinman's design held up better than Barber's, with the major design elements remaining legible deeper into the wear cycle. The series ended in 1945, replaced by John Sinnock's Roosevelt dime, which was rushed into production after Franklin Roosevelt's death in April of that year. The Mercury dime had been the everyday dime of the Depression, the war, and everything in between, and giving it up was not easy. Weinman's Liberty in her winged cap was the last thing many Americans expected to see on a dime, and the Roosevelt replacement, competent but workmanlike, never quite matched it.
