Seated Liberty Half Dollars

The subtype structure mirrors what happened on the other Seated Liberty denominations, with a few additions specific to the half dollar. The No Drapery type appeared in 1839. Drapery was added at Liberty's elbow around 1839-1840. Arrows flanked the date in 1853 to mark the weight reduction from 13.36 grams to 12.44 grams, and rays appeared on the reverse that year only, creating the distinct Arrows and Rays subtype that lasted just twelve months. The arrows alone continued in 1854 and 1855. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST was added above the eagle in 1866, and arrows returned in 1873 and 1874 for the minor metric weight adjustment. Each change creates a collectible subtype, and the half dollar has more of them than any other Seated Liberty denomination because of the one-year Arrows and Rays issue.

Production came from all four mints that were operating during the period. Philadelphia struck half dollars every year. New Orleans contributed from 1839 through 1861, when the Confederate seizure of the facility ended federal coinage there. The Confederacy actually struck a small number of half dollars using the federal dies it captured, and the 1861-O CSA Obverse half dollar, with a Confederate-designed obverse paired with the federal reverse, is one of the most famous coins in American numismatics. Only four originals were struck, and Scott restruck about 500 from the recovered die afterward. San Francisco began half dollar production in 1855 and continued through the end of the series. Carson City added the CC mintmark from 1870 through 1878.

The key dates are scattered across the series. The 1853-O No Arrows, struck in small quantity before the new lighter-weight dies arrived, is a recognized rarity. The 1866-S No Motto, produced before the motto dies reached San Francisco, is similarly scarce. The 1870-CC is a semi-key as the first Carson City half dollar, with a mintage of roughly 54,617. The 1873-CC No Arrows is rare, as with the dime and quarter, because most were melted when the weight changed. The Philadelphia issues from 1879 through 1890 were struck in tiny quantities, under 15,000 per year in most cases, intended for proof sets and collector sales rather than commerce. These low-mintage Philadelphia dates are scarce across the board, though the market for them is specialized enough that prices remain more moderate than you might expect.

The Civil War hit the half dollar the same way it hit every silver denomination. Coins vanished from circulation after 1862, hoarded by a nervous public. The Mint kept striking them, and the wartime issues survive in better average condition than prewar dates precisely because so many were saved rather than spent. The postwar years brought silver back into commerce gradually, and by the 1870s the half dollar was circulating again, though it was losing ground to the smaller denominations in everyday transactions. People increasingly preferred quarters and dimes for routine purchases, and the half dollar was becoming a coin for larger transactions or for stuffing into socks and mattresses.

Proofs were struck most years from the early 1840s through 1891, with mintages growing from a few dozen in the early years to a few thousand by the 1880s. The proofs are among the most attractive coins in the Seated Liberty series, with the half dollar's large planchet showing off Gobrecht's design to full advantage.

Fifty cents during the Seated Liberty era remained a substantial amount. A half dollar bought a good meal at a restaurant, several pounds of meat, a day's supply of groceries for a small family, or a decent seat at a theater. The denomination was the coin that banks preferred for paying out over the counter, and it anchored the silver coinage in a way that the dollar, which was intermittently produced and frequently exported, could not. The half dollar's practical importance began to decline toward the end of the Seated Liberty era as the quarter took on more of the everyday workload, but in 1891, when Barber's new design replaced Gobrecht's, the fifty-cent piece was still one of the most important coins in the American system.
