About this coinHistory

New Orleans delivered 1,290,000 half dollars in 1860, the last full year of normal operations at the branch mint. Confederate forces would seize the facility in January 1861, and it would not resume federal coinage for nearly two decades. The 1860-O was struck entirely under federal authority, before secession threw the Mint's status into question.

Every coin in this mintage was produced under normal federal operations in the final months before secession upended New Orleans and its Mint. The following year's production would be tangled among three different governments, but the 1860-O is cleanly a United States issue without any of the ambiguity that surrounds 1861 New Orleans coinage. The date is available in circulated grades at standard pricing and represents one of the final pre-war New Orleans issues. Collectors sometimes pair it with the complex 1861-O as bookend pieces spanning the secession crisis, the 1860-O representing the last moment of normalcy before everything changed.
