The 2026-S Emerging Liberty cupronickel-clad proof dime is the San Francisco proof issue of the only non-Roosevelt dime struck in the eighty years since the Roosevelt design debuted in 1946. The Circulating Collectible Coin Redesign Act of 2020 (Public Law 116-330) replaced the Sinnock portrait and torch-and-branches reverse for the dime, quarter, half dollar, and dollar for the 250th anniversary year only. The obverse, designed by Esao Andrews of the Artistic Infusion Program and engraved by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Craig A. Campbell, carries a Liberty figure in a stars-and-stripes liberty cap with the inscriptions LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST, and the dual-date 1776~2026. The reverse, designed and sculpted by Eric David Custer, shows an eagle in flight carrying arrows above the motto LIBERTY OVER TYRANNY. The S mintmark sits sharp above the date, dies were hand-polished to mirror finish, and the clad planchet was struck at higher pressure on a slower press. Final mintage will be confirmed once the U.S. Mint closes audited sales reporting for the calendar year.
Authentication on a 2026-S Emerging Liberty clad proof rests on the design plus the standard proof finish diagnostics. The stars-and-stripes liberty cap on the obverse and the eagle-and-arrows LIBERTY OVER TYRANNY reverse must both be present; any 2026 proof with the Sinnock Roosevelt design is a counterfeit, because the Roosevelt design was not struck on dimes in 2026. Mirrored fields under 10x magnification show the deep reflective surface produced by hand-polished dies, the rim profile runs at a sharp ninety-degree transition to the field, and frosted devices appear on examples earning Cameo and Deep Cameo designations from PCGS and NGC. The 1776~2026 dual-date inscription must read clearly. Weight should hit 2.268 grams on a calibrated scale, and the parallel silver-proof companion separates immediately on the scale at 2.50 grams and on edge color (no copper stripe).
The 2026-S Emerging Liberty clad proof carries structural significance as the only proof dime ever struck with a one-year commemorative design across the entire 1946-onward Roosevelt-program era, and as the proof companion to the first design-replacement dime in modern U.S. coinage history. PR69 DCAM will be available at the standard modern-proof price level pending sales results, and PR70 DCAM forms the condition-rarity step where PCGS and NGC populations thin to registry-relevant levels. The issue is required for any complete Semiquincentennial collection covering both circulating-strike and proof formats. Collector demand concentrates on PR70 DCAM examples and on original 2026 proof-set packaging. For the Semiquincentennial program and the design history, see the Roosevelt Dime series history.
