The 1976-S Silver is the final dedicated Brown Pack silver proof of the Eisenhower program at approximately 4,000,000 pieces and is one of the most-collected modern U.S. proof issues because it combines the 40 percent silver composition with the Bicentennial Liberty Bell over moon reverse. The Mint distributed the issue through the three-piece Bicentennial Silver Proof Set, which paired the Eisenhower dollar with matching 40 percent silver Bicentennial quarter and half dollar designs by Jack L. Ahr and Seth G. Huntington. Dennis R. Williams's Liberty Bell reverse was used on the dollar throughout the Silver Proof Set distribution, with the standard thin-lettering Type 2 reverse used across the entire silver proof production run.
For collectors, the 1976-S Silver is a Cameo and Deep Cameo proof, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations cluster at PR68 and PR69 Deep Cameo. The 24.59-gram silver planchet picks up contact and toning marks readily, so PR70 Deep Cameo populations are smaller than the raw 4-million mintage suggests, and milky toning is the most common deduction on cracked-out raw examples. Strike quality is consistently sharp on coins from sealed Bicentennial Silver Proof Sets. The 1976 No S Type 2 Silver Proof error variety is catalogued separately as a single-digit-population trophy issue; the standard 1976-S Silver carries the sharp S mintmark below the truncation of Eisenhower's bust.
This is a regular-issue proof and the easiest of the dedicated Brown Pack silver proofs to acquire because the Bicentennial set distribution put the issue in nearly every collector household that bought a 1976 silver set. Pricing has held flat at modest levels because the surviving population is deep, and the 1976-S Silver pairs naturally with the 1976-S Silver NIFC Blue Pack as the matched silver Bicentennial collector pair. For the Bicentennial Silver Proof Set distribution history and the No S Type 2 error context, see the Eisenhower Dollar series history.
