About this coinHistory

The 1977-S returned the proof Eisenhower to clad-only production at 3,251,152 pieces after the Bicentennial program ended in 1976. The 40 percent silver proof program had been authorized specifically for the 1971-1976 silver dollar proofs, and with the Bicentennial Silver Proof Set closing the program, the 1977-S reverted to a single annual proof option distributed only through the standard six-piece proof set alongside the cents-through-half-dollar lineup. Frank Gasparro's original Eisenhower obverse and Apollo-11-derived eagle reverse returned as well, replacing Dennis R. Williams's Bicentennial Liberty Bell design.

For collectors, the 1977-S is a Cameo and Deep Cameo proof, with Cameo describing the contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices typical of San Francisco proof work. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations cluster at PR68 and PR69 Deep Cameo, with meaningful PR70 Deep Cameo certifications. Strike quality is consistently sharp on coins from sealed proof sets; the eagle, moon surface, and Eisenhower's portrait all come up cleanly. The most common deductions are milky toning and fingerprints from cracked-out raw examples rather than die-state issues. No major varieties are documented for the 1977-S, and no equivalent of the 1976 No S Type 2 Silver Proof error surfaces for the 1977 production.

This is a regular-issue proof and the standard penultimate-year clad option for collectors building an Eisenhower proof set. Pricing has held flat for two decades at modest levels above face plus silver-or-clad differential. The 1977-S pairs naturally with the 1978-S in the post-Bicentennial closing two-year stretch of the series. Sealed annual proof sets from 1977 remain the standard source, and the 1977-S is the easier of the two closing proofs to acquire because the higher mintage produces a deeper certified pool at PR69 Deep Cameo. For the program transition from silver-and-clad to clad-only and the closing-year context, see the Eisenhower Dollar series history.
