About this coinHistory

The 1978 closes the Philadelphia run of the Eisenhower series at 25,702,000 pieces, the final year of the eight-year program. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin Act of October 1978 had authorized a smaller-format replacement for 1979, and the 1978 figure tracks the Treasury's wind-down of the large-format dollar after a continued failure to gain commercial traction with cashiers, vending operators, and the general public. Frank Gasparro's original Eisenhower obverse and Apollo-11-derived eagle reverse remained unchanged through the final production run, with the standard high-relief reverse hub that had been the post-1972 default.

Strike quality on the 1978-P is consistent with late-series Philadelphia work. The eagle, the moon surface, and Eisenhower's portrait all come up cleanly on coins from early die states, with high-point softness on the portrait appearing only at the latest die wear. Most surviving examples grade MS63 to MS65 from broken bags and Mint Set releases, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations thinning at MS66 and meaningfully thin at MS67. The 25.7-million mintage produces a deep certified pool, but the contact-mark hurdle on the heavy 22.68-gram planchet still caps the upper-tier population. No major doubled-die or repunched-mintmark varieties are catalogued for the 1978-P, and no end-of-series die anomalies surface to complicate the final Philadelphia production run.

This is a regular common date carrying small last-year-of-series premiums. Pricing has held flat for two decades; the 1978-P trades inexpensively in raw form and at modest premiums certified in MS65 and MS66. The collecting interest sits in the date's status as the closing Philadelphia issue of the program. Original 1978 Mint Sets remain the most efficient route to high-grade examples and pair the 1978-P with the matched 1978-D as the final P/D set of the Eisenhower era.
