About this coinHistory

The 1978-D closes the Denver run of the Eisenhower series at 33,012,890 pieces and is the final large-format dollar coin produced for general circulation at any U.S. mint. The Susan B. Anthony Dollar Coin Act of October 1978 had already authorized the smaller 26.5 mm replacement, and the 1978-D wrapped the Eisenhower program's commercial-strike output before the December year-end. Frank Gasparro's Eisenhower obverse and the Apollo-11-derived eagle reverse remained unchanged across the final Denver production run, with the standard high-relief reverse hub that had been the post-1972 default.

Strike quality on the 1978-D is sharp and consistent. Denver dies in 1978 maintained the typical striking advantage over Philadelphia, with cleaner moon-surface texture and a fuller eagle on coins from early die states. Most surviving examples grade MS64 to MS66 from broken bags and Mint Set releases, with PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC populations thinning at MS67. The 33-million mintage produces a deep certified pool at MS65 and MS66, and the differential to MS67 anchors the only meaningful premium because contact marks on the heavy planchet accumulate readily under bag handling. No major varieties are catalogued for the 1978-D.

This is a regular common date that closes both a year and an entire program. Pricing has held flat for two decades, with the 1978-D trading at small last-year-of-series premiums and at small premiums over Philadelphia in MS66 because of the strike-quality differential. Original 1978 Mint Sets remain the most efficient route to high-grade examples, and the matched 1978 P/D pairing is the standard collector configuration for the year. Raw coins from broken Federal Reserve bags typically cap in the MS64 range because of contact marks on the heavy planchet. For the series-end context and the Susan B. Anthony transition that followed in 1979, see the Eisenhower Dollar series history.
