The 2019-S New Jersey reverse proof is the lower-mintage of the two San Francisco proof formats for the Edison design, with 46,785 pieces struck against the regular proof's 137,696. Reverse-proof finish flips the standard contrast: mirrored devices set against frosted fields, the inverse of the cameo proofs collectors are used to reading. The format runs only on selected American Innovation issues and is sold either in the four-coin annual reverse-proof set or, for early issues, in 2019 set configurations and special offerings. The result is a sub-50,000 mintage on what is otherwise a routine modern dollar, which is the structural reason this format draws set collectors who otherwise ignore the program.
What separates a strong reverse proof from a routine one is the cleanliness of the mirrored devices, particularly on Edison's coat and the carbon-filament lamp at the center of the design. The frosted fields are sensitive to handling marks, since contact transfers more visibly against frost than against mirror. PCGS and NGC, the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company, grade reverse proofs on the same Proof-60 to Proof-70 scale and apply Cameo and Deep Cameo designations where the contrast warrants. The coin shipped only in U.S. Mint reverse-proof packaging; loose examples without the original capsule warrant closer inspection for handling and for the legitimacy of the holder.
This issue currently carries a Semi-Key classification on the site, but proof entries on the Innovation program are catalog regulars rather than scarcity tiers, and the reverse-proof rarity belongs in the narrative rather than in the badge. Set builders working an Innovation reverse-proof run need this design as one of four 2019 entries; condition rarity at Proof-70 DCAM is the registry angle, with populations thin enough to drive a meaningful premium over Proof-69. For casual collectors the original Mint packaging at issue price is the cleanest entry point. The program's authorizing legislation and the sequencing of state designs are covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
