San Francisco struck only 43,204 of the 2021-S New York Reverse Proof, the lowest mintage of any 2021 New York entry and the smallest of the four format strikes for the design. The coin shipped exclusively in the 2021 American Innovation Dollar Reverse Proof Set, a four-coin annual issue that bundled the New Hampshire, Virginia, New York, and North Carolina designs together. The Reverse Proof Set sold direct from the Mint with strict household ordering limits, and that combination of single-channel distribution and capped order count kept the 2021 reverse-proof totals well under their standard-proof counterparts. The reverse honors the Erie Canal, the 363-mile cut between Albany and Buffalo opened October 26, 1825, and depicts a packet boat moving through the canal pulled by a draft horse on the towpath. New York earned the slot through its July 26, 1788 ratification of the Constitution, the eleventh state.
The reverse-proof finish inverts the standard proof contrast: fields are frosted, devices are mirrored. On New York the inversion reads particularly well across the polished boat hull, the bright reflective rigging lines, and the mirrored draft horse on the towpath, all of which sit as luminous elements against a satin canal scene. The lock structure framing the right side picks up the satin treatment as well and gives the field more visible texture than the standard proof carries. Most examples certify Cameo or higher under the Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company (PCGS and NGC) reverse-proof standards, with PR70 examples not uncommon given the small mintage and the careful capsule-and-set packaging the Mint used. Edge lettering reads the year, mintmark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.
Market position reflects both the small mintage and the closed distribution channel. The 2021-S Reverse Proof trades at a meaningful premium over the regular S Proof and is the format buyers reach for when assembling a complete 2021 New York run. Recommended certified at PR70 for registry pursuits and raw inside the original four-coin reverse-proof set for collectors keeping the program intact in its issued packaging. The Reverse Proof Set program structure is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
