About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 49,936 examples of the 2023-S Mississippi Proof, the standard mirror-and-frost format for the year's First Human Lung Transplant design. The coin shipped in two channels: as a single-coin proof option and inside the 2023 American Innovation Dollar Proof Set, the four-coin annual product that bundled Ohio (Underground Railroad), Louisiana (Higgins Boat), Indiana, and Mississippi. The reverse, designed by Katelyn Arquette of the Mint's Artistic Infusion Program and sculpted by Medallic Artist Craig A. Campbell, depicts a surgical assistant handing forceps to the surgeon during the operation Dr. James D. Hardy performed at the University of Mississippi Medical Center on June 11, 1963, with a pair of human lungs rendered in soft relief in the background. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIRST HUMAN LUNG TRANSPLANT, and MISSISSIPPI. Mississippi earns the slot in the program rotation as the twentieth state, admitted December 10, 1817.

The standard proof finish puts mirrored fields against frosted devices, and the Mississippi design carries the contrast well across two elements: the two gloved hands meeting at center, which catch light as discrete tactile shapes against the deep mirror background, and the satin-textured lung anatomy in the background, which reads as soft volumetric form rather than dissolving into flat field. Most 2023-S Mississippi Proof examples certify Cameo or Deep Cameo (DCAM, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices) under Professional Coin Grading Service and Numismatic Guaranty Company (PCGS and NGC) standards, with PR70 examples not unusual given the small mintage and the careful capsule packaging the Mint used. Manganese-brass clad will milk-spot in humid storage; capsules opened and reseated risk introducing the moisture that produces the patches.

Market position runs as expected for a low-mintage modern proof. The 2023-S Proof trades at a sturdy premium over the Denver and Philadelphia circulation strikes, certified PR70 commands the strongest interest from registry-set builders, and the original four-coin proof set is the format buyers favor for keeping the 2023 program intact in its issued packaging. The badge stays Regular: proofs are never classified Key Date, and rarity context lives in the prose rather than in the badge. The proof program structure is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
