About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck only 32,000 of the 2023-S Mississippi Reverse Proof, tied with the 2023-S Louisiana Reverse Proof as one of the lowest reverse-proof figures in the entire American Innovation Dollar program through 2023. The coin shipped exclusively in the 2023 American Innovation Dollar Reverse Proof Set, a four-coin annual product bundling Ohio, Louisiana, Indiana, and Mississippi together, with strict household ordering limits enforced by the U.S. Mint. The closed channel and the capped order count drove the 2023 reverse-proof totals well under their standard-proof counterparts: 49,936 standard proofs against 32,000 reverse proofs for the Mississippi design alone. The reverse honors the world's first human lung transplant, performed by Dr. James D. Hardy and his team at the University of Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson on June 11, 1963. Designer Katelyn Arquette and sculptor Craig A. Campbell rendered the operation in progress: a surgical assistant passes forceps to the lead surgeon, with a pair of human lungs in the background. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, FIRST HUMAN LUNG TRANSPLANT, and MISSISSIPPI.

The reverse-proof finish inverts the standard proof contrast: fields are frosted, devices are mirrored. On the Mississippi design the inversion reads especially well across the polished anatomy of the lungs, which catch light as bright reflective volumes against the satin background, and across the mirrored gloved hands and forceps at center, which gain a metallic sheen they cannot carry under the standard proof treatment. Most examples certify Cameo or higher under PCGS and NGC reverse-proof standards, with PR70 examples not uncommon given the small mintage and the careful capsule-and-set packaging. Manganese-brass surfaces still show occasional milk spotting on examples kept in humid storage.

Market position reflects both the small mintage and the closed distribution channel. The 2023-S Reverse Proof carries a meaningful premium over the standard 2023-S Proof and is the format buyers reach for when assembling a complete 2023 Mississippi run across all four strikes. Recommended certified at PR70 for registry pursuits and raw inside the original four-coin reverse-proof set for collectors keeping the program intact in its issued packaging. The badge stays Regular per program convention; reverse proofs are not classified Key Date, and the 32,000-piece scarcity is conveyed in the prose rather than the badge. The Reverse Proof Set program structure is covered in the American Innovation Dollar series history.
