About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 1,120,000 examples of the 2024 Alabama American Innovation Dollar, matching the Denver total to the coin and giving the year's second design the highest paired circulation figure of any 2024 issue. The U.S. Mint released the rolls and bags on April 8, 2024, the second of four 2024 state designs after Illinois in February. The reverse honors the Saturn V rocket, designed and sculpted by U.S. Mint medallic artist Craig A. Campbell. The composition shows the rocket in launch configuration with the Moon at the horizon, and inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, SATURN V, and ALABAMA. The state earns the design through the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, where the engineering teams under Wernher von Braun developed the 363-foot launch vehicle and where a complete Saturn V now lies horizontal at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center as a public display.

The Philadelphia issue distributes the same way as the Denver counterpart: 25-coin rolls and 100-coin bags through the U.S. Mint catalog, no general circulation release, and effectively the entire surviving population in collector hands at MS65 and above. Strike characteristics on the Philadelphia issue follow the standard manganese-brass pattern: a satin obverse Statue of Liberty (Justin Kunz design, Phebe Hemphill sculpt) and a reasonably crisp reverse, with the most variable detail being the booster-stage definition where the F-1 engine cluster meets the launch tower in the lower portion of the design. Examples that show clean separation between the engine bells and the tower framework grade meaningfully better than examples where the area mushes together. The difference is visible at MS66 and becomes a real factor above MS67.

For set-builders the 2024-P sits in the upper-middle mintage band of the program, well below the 2018 introductory and early 2019 issues but a substantial step up from the entire 2022 and 2023 production years. The badge remains Regular: the 1,120,000 mintage, while modest in modern dollar terms, is more than sufficient to supply collector demand without registry-tier scarcity pressure outside MS68 and above. Pricing tracks original-roll availability; certified MS67 and MS68 examples carry modest premiums over face for set-builders willing to wait for the right strike.
