About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 800,000 examples of the 2024-S Maine Proof, the standard cameo proof of the year's third Innovation design and a figure tied to both the 2024 American Innovation Proof Set production run and individual single-coin proof orders. The reverse, designed and sculpted by U.S. Mint medallic artist Phebe Hemphill, honors Dr. Bernard Lown's 1962 direct current defibrillator with a profile portrait of Lown above and the cardioverter device shown in operation below. Cameo, the strong contrast between mirrored fields and frosted devices, suits this composition particularly well: the Lown portrait's bone structure and the textured paddles of the defibrillator both lift cleanly off the polished background, where the standard circulation strike's satin finish flattens those same elements. Inscriptions read UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, BERNARD LOWN, M.D., DIRECT CURRENT DEFIBRILLATOR, and MAINE.

Strike on the 2024-S Proof is, as expected for a San Francisco proof, consistently sharp across the population. The reverse detail to look at is the Lown portrait itself, particularly the cheekbone, brow, and temple line; well-struck examples show full separation between the frosted relief and the polished field, while weaker strikes can blur the transition into a soft halo. PCGS and NGC populations cluster in PR69 Deep Cameo and PR69 Ultra Cameo (Deep Cameo at PCGS, Ultra Cameo at NGC, the same designation under different names), with PR70 a working ceiling rather than a rarity. Holders attribute both reverse design and sculpt to Hemphill, which is the standard convention when one Mint Medallic artist handles both stages.

For collectors building a complete strike-format set of the Maine design, the 800,000 standard proof sits below the 1.12 million Philadelphia and Denver circulation strikes but well above the 30,000 reverse proof, the year's true low-mintage strike format. The badge remains Regular, since the standard proof is the program's high-availability collector format and is supplied through the original 2024 American Innovation Proof Set without any scarcity pressure. The working entry point is original Mint set packaging or a certified PR69 in a TPG, the third-party grading service, holder.
