San Francisco struck only 30,000 examples of the 2024-S Missouri Reverse Proof, the lowest-mintage strike format of the four 2024 Missouri issues and one of the lowest reverse-proof figures in the entire American Innovation Dollar program to date, undercutting the prior 2023 series low of 32,000. The figure ties to the 2024 American Innovation Reverse Proof Set, which the U.S. Mint released on December 10, 2024. The reverse proof finish inverts the standard cameo geometry: the design devices, here Eric David Custer's portrait of George Washington Carver and the surrounding peanut leaves, blossoms, and pods, take a polished mirror finish, while the background field is struck with a frosted, matte texture. The inversion suits the composition because Carver's coat and the laboratory equipment read with a sculptural depth in mirror polish that the standard proof renders only as outline against gloss.
Reverse proof production requires specially prepared dies polished on the relief surfaces and frosted across the field, the opposite of standard proof die preparation, which consumes more die life per coin. That extra production cost is part of why reverse proof mintages run a fraction of standard proof mintages across the Innovation series. The 30,000 figure for the 2024 Missouri Reverse Proof marks another step down from the already trimmed 32,000 reverse proofs that San Francisco struck for each of the four 2023 state designs. The drop has nothing to do with Missouri specifically; it reflects the U.S. Mint continuing to pull its reverse-proof set production target lower against soft modern dollar collector demand through 2024.
For set builders the 2024-S Reverse Proof is the scarcest of the four Missouri strike formats by a wide margin, but the badge remains Regular because the reverse proof is a strike-format distinction, not a key-date scarcity in the traditional sense. Original 2024 American Innovation Reverse Proof Set packaging is the cheapest entry point; certified PR69 and PR70 examples trade at modest premiums in TPG (third-party grading) holders. For broader program context, see the American Innovation Dollar series history.
