About this coinHistory

The 2015-P Eisenhower Reverse Proof is the rarest single Presidential Dollar entry of 2015 and one of the lowest-mintage Reverse Proof issues of the entire program. The Mint struck the coin at Philadelphia (not San Francisco, where the standard 2015-S proof was produced) exclusively for the Eisenhower Coin & Chronicles Set, a four-component collector product that paired this Reverse Proof dollar with a presidential portrait silver medal, an engraved Mint label, and a small print/postage cover honoring the 34th president. The Mint released four Coin & Chronicles Sets across 2015 (Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson), and the Eisenhower set carried the lowest sales of the four; just 16,744 sets sold, fixing the Reverse Proof Eisenhower mintage at that figure. By comparison, the Truman, Kennedy, and Johnson Reverse Proofs in their respective sets all came in higher, making the Eisenhower the genuine key of the four.

The Reverse Proof finish reverses the standard cameo recipe: instead of frosted devices against mirrored fields, this issue carries mirrored Eisenhower portrait and inscriptions standing out against frosted, satin-finished fields. The contrast reads cleanly under a loupe but demands careful handling, since any field hairline cuts straight through the satin texture and grades down hard. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, designates these coins PR70 or PR69 without the usual Cameo or Deep Cameo modifier (the entire surface treatment is the finish, and a separate frost-versus-mirror grade does not apply). Authentication is straightforward because the issue exists in only one form (Philadelphia, Reverse Proof, sold in one product), and any "reverse proof" Eisenhower dollar showing an S mintmark or no mintmark is misattributed.

For collecting, the 16,744 mintage puts the 2015-P Eisenhower Reverse Proof on a different tier than the 1.27 million 2015-S regular proof. PR70 examples trade in the low to mid three figures, with PR69 holders following at a meaningful discount; original sealed Coin & Chronicles Sets carry an additional premium for collectors who want the full four-piece presentation rather than just the dollar. The Mint had not capped Coin & Chronicles sales, and the unsold-inventory cutoff set the final number, anchoring this date in any complete Reverse Proof subset. For program-wide context on the four 2015 Coin & Chronicles releases and the broader Reverse Proof story, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
