Philadelphia struck 48,709 Reverse Proof Kennedy dollars in 2015 for the John F. Kennedy Coin and Chronicles Set, the third of four such sets the Mint released in 2015 to mark the year's Presidential Dollar designs. The set went on sale July 23, 2015, at $57.95 and paired the Reverse Proof dollar with a Kennedy presidential silver medal, four reproduction historic postage stamps, and a Kennedy informational booklet. The 48,709 figure is the second-highest 2015 Coin and Chronicles mintage (Truman issued at 17,138, Eisenhower at 16,737, Kennedy at 48,709, LBJ at 23,905) because Kennedy demand was projected to be far stronger than the other three subjects, and the larger production run was authorized accordingly. Don Everhart designed both sides of the coin, the Kennedy obverse and the Statue of Liberty reverse used on every Presidential Dollar from 2010 onward.
The Reverse Proof finish inverts the standard proof formula: mirror-polished raised devices set against frosted, sandblasted fields, the visual opposite of the brilliant fields and cameo devices on the 2015-S proof. The effect throws Kennedy's portrait into bright reflective relief against a matte white background, and the Statue of Liberty reverse reads with the same inversion. Strike is uniformly sharp because the small mintage finished before any meaningful die wear set in, and PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, populates PR69 and PR70 heavily with the Reverse Cameo designation. Edge lettering carries the date, the P mintmark, and the standard inscriptions, applied in a separate third strike.
The 2015-P Kennedy Reverse Proof is the scarcest 2015 Presidential Dollar of any kind by a wide margin: 48,709 against P and D NIFC mintages of 4.9M and 3.5M and a 2015-S proof mintage of 1.27M. Original sealed Coin and Chronicles Sets remain the preferred holding for set collectors and trade at multiples of the original $57.95 issue price. Singles broken out and certified PR69 or PR70 trade at modest premiums and serve specialists chasing the year-set or the cross-issue Reverse Proof subset (four 2015-P, the 2016-S Reagan, the 2020-S G.H.W. Bush). The classification on this page is Regular because the rarity argument lives in the prose, not the badge. For broader program context, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
