2015-P Harry S. Truman, Reverse Proof Proof

Philadelphia struck 49,051 Reverse Proof Truman dollars in 2015 for the Truman Coin and Chronicles Set, released June 30, 2015 at noon Eastern with an initial 17,000-set cap and a five-set household limit. The initial cap sold out at the Mint within roughly fifteen minutes, the second of four 2015 Coin and Chronicles releases (Eisenhower April 23, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson), and the 49,051 final mintage is the highest of the four 2015 Reverse Proofs after the Mint expanded production. Each set bundled the Reverse Proof dollar with a one-ounce silver Truman presidential medal, a 1973 eight-cent Truman commemorative postage stamp, an engraved portrait print, and a certificate of authenticity. Don Everhart designed and sculpted both faces, and this was the Mint's first application of the Reverse Proof finish to a Presidential Dollar.

A Reverse Proof inverts the standard proof relationship: the fields read frosted and the raised devices polish to mirror, the opposite of the cameo contrast collectors see on the 2015-S regular proof. On the Truman obverse the bust, lettering, and stars come up reflective against a satin background, and the Statue of Liberty reverse mirrors the same inversion. Strike is uniformly sharp because the dies were used for a single short Coin and Chronicles run rather than the longer regular-proof print. Authentication turns on whether the inverted finish is intact: any softness in the field frosting or haze across the polished portrait is what PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and NGC, the Numismatic Guaranty Company, will catch when assigning Proof 69 versus Proof 70 with the Reverse Proof designation.

The 2015-P Reverse Proof is the highest-mintage of the four 2015 Coin and Chronicles dollars (Truman 49,051, Eisenhower 16,737, Kennedy 24,544, Johnson 24,531), reflecting the production lift after Eisenhower demand showed how undersized the initial 17,000 cap had been. Standard acquisition is either an intact set in original Mint packaging or a certified Reverse Proof slab in Proof 69 or Proof 70 with the Reverse Proof designation. Intact sets command meaningful premiums over loose Reverse Proofs because the silver medal and 1973 stamp anchor set value and are harder to source loose than the dollar itself.
