San Francisco struck 1,272,763 proof Dwight D. Eisenhower dollars in 2015, distributed inside the annual Proof Set, the Silver Proof Set, and the four-coin Presidential Dollar Proof Set. The proof figure is independent of the circulation mintage; only the proofs carry an S mintmark, and they were produced under entirely different press protocols using polished planchets and double-strike die work. The release date for the 2015 Eisenhower business strikes was April 13, 2015; the proof sets shipped on the Mint's standard annual cycle. Michael Gaudioso engraved the obverse portrait of the 34th president, paired with Don Everhart's Statue of Liberty reverse shared by every business strike and proof in the series.
Proof Eisenhower dollars from this issue carry the standard San Francisco recipe: deeply mirrored fields with frosted devices producing strong cameo contrast, the kind of finish that grades comfortably into PR69 Deep Cameo (Deep Cameo, the strongest frost-against-mirror grade designation used by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service) for the great majority of the surviving population. The honest grading question is PR70 versus PR69, and the typical disqualifiers are pinpoint hairlines on the open right field beside the portrait, the polished plane on Eisenhower's cheek, and any frost break on the high points of the bust. The reverse holds up well at the torch flame and the figure of Liberty's drapery, which were two of the persistent strike-softness points on early-program circulation strikes; the proof dies were tuned to bring those areas up cleanly.
The 2015-S Eisenhower trades as a routine modern proof in slabs, with PR70 Deep Cameo examples carrying a moderate premium over PR69 holders that themselves stay close to set-breakdown levels. Collectors most often acquire the date inside its original government packaging and crack it for grading only when chasing a Registry-grade target. Sheldon rarity terminology does not really apply to a 1.27-million-piece modern proof; the issue is common in absolute terms, and its collecting interest sits in the cameo grade and in completing a 2007 through 2016 proof run. For program structure, the 2012 NIFC transition, and the four-president release pattern, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
