About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 1,272,763 proof John F. Kennedy dollars in 2015, the third design in the four-coin 2015 Presidential Dollar Proof Set alongside Truman, Eisenhower, and Lyndon B. Johnson. The figure tracks closely with the year's other proof totals (Truman 1.27M, Eisenhower 1.27M, LBJ 1.27M) because the Mint produced the four 2015 proofs almost exclusively as a bundled set rather than as individually orderable issues. The Kennedy half dollar has carried his portrait continuously since 1964, struck in the weeks after his November 1963 assassination, so the 2015 dollar marks JFK's second federal coin and gives proof specialists a second active obverse to compare against Gilroy Roberts' fifty-one-year-old half dollar portrait. Don Everhart designed both sides of the dollar, an unusual program quirk: he produced the Kennedy obverse and the Statue of Liberty reverse used on every Presidential Dollar from 2010 forward.

The 2015-S Kennedy carries the deeply mirrored fields and frosted devices typical of late-program San Francisco proof production: a strong Cameo contrast (the visible texture difference between the reflective background and the satin finish on Kennedy's portrait), full strike on the temple and the high points of the hair where a worn die would soften first, and clean detail on the reverse torch flame and crown rays. The S mintmark sits on the edge alongside the legends E PLURIBUS UNUM and IN GOD WE TRUST, applied in a separate third strike after the proof dies impress the faces. The obverse legend reads "JOHN F. KENNEDY / 35TH PRESIDENT / 1961-1963", three of the shortest tenure dates on any Presidential Dollar, second only to Garfield (1881) and W.H. Harrison (1841).

The 2015-S Kennedy proof is essentially never sold as a single. The standard acquisition path is the original four-coin 2015 Presidential Dollar Proof Set, the four-design entry in the 2015 Silver Proof Set, or the comprehensive 2015 United States Mint Proof Set. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, populates the PR69 Deep Cameo and PR70 Deep Cameo grades heavily, and modern proofs in those grades trade at small premiums above raw set prices. The 2015-P Reverse Proof Kennedy from the Coin and Chronicles Set is the scarce companion at 48,709, but the standard 2015-S remains the affordable entry. For broader program context, see the Presidential Dollar series history.
