Specifications are identical to the circulation strike; the difference lies entirely in the manufacturing technique and the resulting surface quality.

Proof examples of the 1855 are scarce, with populations in the range of a few dozen survivors. The coin shows the mirrored fields and sharp device detail expected of Philadelphia Mint proofs from this era. Color ranges from brown through red-brown, with the amount and quality of original red being a significant value factor for copper proofs.

Auction appearances are periodic rather than predictable. A collector watching the major auction houses will encounter an 1855 proof half cent at least once every few years, though the specific condition and pricing of each offering varies. The proof market for late Braided Hair dates is less competitive than for the rare proof-only years of the 1840s, but the coins are still scarce enough to require active pursuit.
