About this coinHistory

The 1840 Drapery proof half dime is the first proof of the Stars Obverse With Drapery subtype. Proof production captured the new design in its earliest form, showing the modified Liberty figure with the drapery beneath her elbow. Surviving examples are rare, consistent with the general scarcity of pre-1858 proof half dimes.

The 1840 Drapery proof pairs historically with the 1840 No Drapery proof as two sides of the transition year. Collectors building a complete proof type set of Seated Liberty half dimes need both to document the design change that took place mid-year.
