The 1840-O No Drapery half dime represents the New Orleans Mint's last year of striking the No Drapery subtype. As with the Philadelphia issue, 1840 was a transition year: both No Drapery and Drapery versions were produced. The O mintmark on the reverse identifies New Orleans as the mint of origin.
The 1840-O No Drapery is scarcer than the Philadelphia counterpart and carries a modest premium. New Orleans mintages for this period were consistently lower than Philadelphia's, and branch mint No Drapery coins are harder to find than their Philadelphia equivalents. A collector pursuing a complete No Drapery subtype including both mints needs this coin as a separate acquisition from the 1840 Philadelphia No Drapery.
