About this coinHistory

Philadelphia delivered 1,150,000 half dimes in 1841, a solid output that reflected continued commercial demand for the denomination. The design is now the Stars Obverse With Drapery subtype that would remain essentially unchanged through 1859. The 1841 is the first full year of Drapery production and the first full year since the transition the previous year. William Henry Harrison died on April 4, 1841, just one month into his presidency, making him the first American president to die in office. John Tyler assumed the presidency, and the half dime circulated through the resulting constitutional uncertainty about presidential succession.

The 1841 is a common date in the Seated Liberty half dime series. Circulated examples are plentiful, Uncirculated coins are available, and the date does not carry significant premiums beyond what age alone suggests. A well-struck 1841 with original toning in Very Fine or better is a satisfying coin that represents the Stars Obverse With Drapery subtype at a moderate price.

Die varieties exist for the year and are tracked by specialists, but none dominate collector interest. For date collectors working through the series, the 1841 is a straightforward acquisition that fills the year without requiring significant search or budget.
