New Orleans production was relatively low for the year, and the 1844-O is notably scarcer than the Philadelphia counterpart. The semi-key status reflects both the low mintage and the typical survival pattern of branch mint Seated Liberty silver coins. New Orleans half dimes of the 1840s and 1850s were produced in smaller numbers than Philadelphia issues, and they circulated heavily in the southern states where they served as the primary small silver denomination alongside dimes and fractional Spanish colonial coins.
