About this coinHistory

Philadelphia struck 1,564,000 half dimes in 1845, a robust output that made the date one of the more common in the Stars Obverse With Drapery subtype. Texas was formally annexed to the United States in December 1845, setting in motion the diplomatic confrontation with Mexico that would lead to war the following year. The Irish potato famine began during the same year, triggering waves of immigration that would transform American demographics over the next decade.

The 1845 is common in all grades. Circulated examples are plentiful, Uncirculated coins are available, and the year is an easy acquisition for date collectors. Die varieties exist but none command significant premiums. A well-preserved 1845 with attractive toning and clean surfaces is a pleasant representative of the date at a moderate price.
