About this coinHistory

New Orleans delivered 140,000 half dimes in 1849, a low figure that gives the 1849-O a modest scarcity premium though not quite semi-key status. The O mintmark appears on the reverse. Surviving examples are available but less common than the higher-mintage 1848-O, and finding a problem-free coin in Very Fine or better takes more effort than for common branch-mint dates.

The 1849-O circulated alongside the 1849 Philadelphia issues through the early Gold Rush period. Southern commerce was benefiting from the war-related economic activity of the late 1840s, and New Orleans was producing silver coinage to meet regional demand for small change.
