About this coinHistory

Philadelphia produced 955,000 half dimes in 1850 as the country negotiated the Compromise of 1850. The series of laws that became the Compromise addressed slavery in the territories, California's admission as a free state, and the Fugitive Slave Act's strengthening. Zachary Taylor died in July, and Millard Fillmore completed the presidential term. The half dime circulated through the political crisis as its ordinary workhorse role continued.

The 1850 is a common date. Die varieties exist and are tracked by specialists, though none dominate collector interest. Uncirculated examples are available, and the date is not expensive in any grade short of top-tier gem quality. A well-struck 1850 with attractive toning represents the mid-century Seated Liberty half dime at a moderate price.
