About this coinHistory

New Orleans produced 2,200,000 Arrows half dimes in 1853 after the weight reduction, a substantial increase over the tiny No Arrows production earlier in the year. The 1853-O Arrows is common in circulated grades, and its sharp contrast with the rare 1853-O No Arrows illustrates how completely the weight reduction changed branch mint production priorities. After the Arrows change, New Orleans could produce half dimes in much larger quantities without worrying about the bullion-value problem.

The 1853-O Arrows is a readily available New Orleans issue and is often used by type collectors as the branch mint representative of the Arrows subtype. The O mintmark appears on the reverse. Surviving examples are plentiful in most grades, and Uncirculated coins are achievable for a reasonable premium over the Philadelphia counterpart.
