The 1853-O No Arrows half dime is a major key date. New Orleans struck only 160,000 No Arrows half dimes before transitioning to the Arrows version mid-year. The low mintage, combined with the typical branch mint survival patterns and the short production window, has made the 1853-O No Arrows one of the rarest Seated Liberty half dimes. PCGS estimates the total surviving population at well under 1,000 coins across all grades, and most are in lower circulated condition.
PCGS has certified only 62 examples total across all grades, with just 7 in Mint State. Most available pieces have very weak dates, a characteristic of the die state and the heavy circulation these coins experienced. The combination of factors that produce the rarity is distinctive. The mintage was small because No Arrows production was cut short by the weight reduction. The coins that were made circulated hard in southern commerce, where branch mint half dimes served as the primary small silver denomination. And when collectors began pursuing the date later in the nineteenth century, the supply was already thin.
Pricing reflects the key-date status. Even in Good condition, the 1853-O No Arrows trades in the mid-three-figure range. Fine pushes higher. Very Fine and above enter premium territory, and Uncirculated examples are rare enough to command prices that reach well into five figures. The 1853-O No Arrows is one of the coins that separates casual Seated Liberty half dime collectors from serious ones, and complete sets frequently remain incomplete specifically because of this date.
