About this coinHistory

The 1866 Philadelphia half dime had a mintage of 10,000 coins, the lowest Philadelphia Seated Liberty half dime figure of the 1860s. The post-war economy was still adjusting, and silver coinage had not fully returned to circulation. The Mint produced the 10,000 coins primarily for collector sales, and the surviving population reflects that pattern: most examples are in Uncirculated or near-Uncirculated condition, with relatively few worn circulation coins.

The 1866 key-date premium is consistent across all grades. Even in lower circulated condition, the coin commands a significant markup over common-date Seated Liberty half dimes. Uncirculated examples with original color and strong strike detail reach into four-figure prices for gem quality.

The 1866-S had a larger mintage (120,000 coins), continuing the Philadelphia-San Francisco divergence that had defined Civil War and early Reconstruction half dime production.
