About this coinHistory

San Francisco produced 120,000 half dimes in 1866, repeating the previous year's branch mint output. The 1866-S is a regular-date San Francisco issue, available in circulated grades at moderate prices. The S mintmark appears on the reverse. Western commerce continued to absorb silver coinage during the Reconstruction years while the eastern states were still working through the aftermath of the wartime hoarding crisis.
