About this coinHistory

The 1964 Accented Hair proof is the earliest die state of the year's Philadelphia proof run, struck from the first proof working dies before the master hub was reworked. Approximately 40,000 examples are estimated to come from the early proof die life, a subset of the 3,950,762 total 1964 proof mintage. The hair strands above Kennedy's ear show longer, sharper relief on these dies than on the later standard hub, and the variety is named for that more pronounced hair detail. The composition is the same 90% silver and 10% copper at 12.50 g (0.36169 troy ounces of fine silver) as the standard proof, with the same polished mirror fields and frosted devices. The hub change has been linked in numismatic literature to a reported objection from Jacqueline Kennedy regarding the depth of the hair detail; the timing of the modification supports that account, though the original correspondence has never been published in full.

Authentication on this variety rests on two diagnostics that a careful eye can verify with a loupe. First, examine the hair strands above and behind Kennedy's ear: the Accented Hair die shows two clearly separated, sharp parallel strands extending toward the back of the head, while the standard hub blends those strands into a softer, less-defined mass. Second, look at the lower-left serif of the I in LIBERTY. Accented Hair examples show a small but distinct serif at the base of the letter that is absent or sharply reduced on the standard hub. The motto IN GOD WE TRUST also shows slightly bolder letter relief on Accented Hair pieces. PCGS and NGC both recognize the variety and apply the attribution on the holder; raw seller claims without a TPG holder warrant skepticism because the hair-detail call is not always obvious from a single photograph. Strike quality on the early dies tends to be sharper than the later standard run because the Accented Hair dies were fresh from the master, which raises the probability of finding Cameo and Deep Cameo (DCAM) contrast on these pieces.

As a collecting target the Accented Hair proof carries a meaningful premium over the standard 1964 proof across every grade, with the gap widening sharply at PR67 and above and again at PR68. DCAM examples are genuinely scarce because the variety's early-die-state nature means the dies were also at peak frost when they produced the variant. Type-set Kennedy proof collectors typically buy one Accented Hair to anchor the first-year design, set-builders chase it as a separate slot from the standard proof, and registry collectors weigh it heavily in the early proof rankings. Authentication should always come through a major TPG holder for this issue.
