1976-S Bicentennial, Clad Proof

The 1976-S Bicentennial clad proof carries the dual-dated 1776-1976 obverse and Seth Huntington's Independence Hall reverse, the design that replaced Gasparro's heraldic eagle for the duration of the Bicentennial program. Huntington won the open Treasury competition announced in late 1973, and the rendering shows Independence Hall in Philadelphia with the inscription "200 YEARS OF FREEDOM" above. Composition follows the post-1971 cupronickel standard: outer layers of 75% copper and 25% nickel bonded to a pure copper core, finished weight 11.34 g, no silver content. Mintage of 7,059,099 is by far the highest of any Kennedy proof in the 1968-1979 stretch, more than double the typical pre-Bicentennial run, reflecting the surge of collector demand for Bicentennial coinage that the Mint anticipated and supplied. The clad proof was sold both in the 1975 and 1976 Proof Sets, since the Mint shipped 1776-1976 dual-dated proofs through both calendar years.

What collectors look for on the 1976-S clad proof is Cameo and Deep Cameo contrast, and unusually for the era this date supplies it in volume. Cameo refers to the visual contrast between mirrored proof fields and frosted devices, produced when freshly sandblasted dies struck their first several hundred coins before frost coverage softened. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, designates these as CAM, with the strongest contrast graded DCAM (Deep Cameo). DCAM examples are common on 1976-S clad proofs, more so than on any earlier or adjacent year, because the Mint produced fresh dies in higher volume to handle the larger Bicentennial run and rotated them more frequently before frost decay. PR69 DCAM survival is healthy and PR70 examples turn up regularly. Authentication runs through composition first: weight at 11.34 g separates this issue cleanly from the 11.50 g 1976-S Bicentennial silver proof, and the cupronickel rim shows the reddish copper-core line at the edge that the silver-clad issue does not. The S mintmark below the bust was hand-punched per die.

In the collecting landscape the 1976-S Bicentennial clad proof is the easiest of the era's DCAM acquisitions for any collector and the obvious paired counterpart to the silver Bicentennial proof. Standard PR69 examples are inexpensive given the supply; PR70 DCAM pieces command a meaningful premium driven by registry-set competition rather than cameo-population scarcity. A TPG slab provides the cameo designation and protects the mirror surface from cellophane haze.
