1976-S Bicentennial, Silver Proof

The 1976-S Bicentennial silver proof is the 40% silver-clad proof companion to the cupronickel Bicentennial proof and the only silver Kennedy proof issued between the 1970-S and the 1992-S Silver Proof Set reintroduction. Composition reverts to the silver-clad recipe used 1965 through 1970: outer layers of 80% silver and 20% copper bonded to a 21% silver core for an overall 40% silver content, finished weight 11.50 g, actual silver weight 0.14792 troy ounces. The design pair matches the clad Bicentennial proof, with Roberts's portrait on the dual-dated 1776-1976 obverse and Seth Huntington's Independence Hall reverse with the inscription "200 YEARS OF FREEDOM". The Mint sold this proof in the three-coin Bicentennial Silver Proof Set alongside the silver Bicentennial quarter and silver Bicentennial Eisenhower dollar, housed in a hard plastic holder with a presentation slip cover. The set sold through 1986 before remaining inventory was exhausted, with original packaging surviving in quantity today.

What collectors look for on this issue is Cameo and Deep Cameo contrast against the silver-clad substrate, which polishes differently from cupronickel and tends to hold cameo frost longer. Cameo refers to the visual contrast between mirrored proof fields and frosted devices, produced when freshly sandblasted dies struck their first several hundred coins. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, designates these as CAM, with the strongest contrast graded DCAM (Deep Cameo). DCAM examples are common on the silver Bicentennial proof, and PR69 DCAM survival is healthy. Authentication runs through composition first: weight at 11.50 g separates the silver issue cleanly from the 11.34 g cupronickel Bicentennial proof, and the rim shows uniform silver coloring all the way through rather than the reddish copper-core line that gives the clad version away. Specific gravity also sorts the two compositions on raw pieces, and the TPG slab insert explicitly designates "Silver" to remove any ambiguity.

In the collecting landscape this issue functions as both a numismatic and a small silver holding. Type-set buyers acquire it as the only proof silver Kennedy struck between 1970 and 1992. Bicentennial set builders chase original three-coin presentation packaging in pristine condition. Standard PR68 and PR69 examples remain affordable; PR70 DCAM material commands a premium driven by registry-set competition. The catalog mintage figure of 11,000,000 used on the inventory card appears to fold the silver business strike and the silver proof together; PCGS CoinFacts lists a 1976-S silver proof mintage of roughly 4,000,000, with the silver business strike accounting for the balance, and the figure has been flagged for downstream correction.
