About this coinHistory

San Francisco struck 741,678 Kennedy half dollars in 90% silver for the 1997 Silver Proof Set, a routine figure sitting between the 1995 program trough of 679,985 and the 1998 modest recovery to 878,792. The program had settled into a stable subscription pattern by mid-decade, with annual silver-set production tied closely to the size of the Mint's silver-set mailing list rather than to broader market enthusiasm. The 1997 standard Proof Set retained its long-running cupronickel half, while the silver companion in this Silver Proof Set carried the restored pre-1965 90% silver and 10% copper recipe at 12.50 g and 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. Actual silver weight is 0.36169 troy ounces. The S mintmark sits above the date on the obverse with Gilroy Roberts's GR initials at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Authentication separating the silver coin from its cupronickel-clad sibling rests on three quick tests. Edge inspection reveals uniform silver reeding on the silver issue and a copper-colored line through the clad rim from its exposed core. Weight runs 12.50 g for the silver and 11.34 g for the clad, a 1.16 g difference any small scale will resolve. Specific gravity gives a final confirmation if needed. Cameo and Deep Cameo describe the contrast between mirrored proof fields and frosted devices, designated CAM and DCAM by PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, and Cameo and Ultra Cameo by NGC, Numismatic Guaranty Company. The Mint's proof-die preparation by 1997 produced full deep cameo on essentially every San Francisco silver strike, so PR69 DCAM is the certified-market floor rather than a target grade.

For collectors the 1997-S silver proof functions as a year-set placeholder and a small silver holding rolled into one package. PR69 DCAM trades at modest premium over melt, with the meaningful price gap appearing at PR70 DCAM where surface preservation separates technically identical coins under loupe inspection. Original red Silver Proof Set packaging surfaces routinely. The buyer base splits into the same three pools that characterize the entire 1992 through 2005 silver run: type-set collectors needing one 90% silver Kennedy from the modern reintroduction era, year-set builders working 1997 issues across denominations, and bullion-conscious collectors who hold the issue partly for its 0.36169 troy ounce silver content. The 741,678 mintage falls in the lower-middle of the program range and carries no special scarcity status.
