About this coinHistory

The 1998-S clad proof is the standard cupronickel-clad Kennedy half in the 1998 Proof Set and should not be confused with the separately catalogued 1998-S SMS Matte Finish Kennedy issued through the Kennedy Coin Collection Set. The SMS piece is a Special Mint Set finish struck in low mintage as a tribute to the 1968 collector set tradition, and it trades on a different price track entirely. The regular 1998-S clad proof here was struck in the routine high-polish proof finish, with San Francisco delivering 2,086,507 pieces in the standard recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer clad over a pure copper core at 11.34 g and 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The S mintmark sits above the date on the obverse; Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG appears to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

The grading market for this issue runs on Cameo and Deep Cameo contrast. Cameo refers to the visual effect when mirrored proof fields stay glassy and devices hold a frosted matte appearance, produced by freshly prepared sandblasted dies in their early working life. PCGS, the Professional Coin Grading Service, designates these as CAM, with the strongest contrast graded DCAM (Deep Cameo). NGC uses Cameo and Ultra Cameo for equivalent finish categories. The most important authentication point at this date is finish identification, since the standard 1998-S proof carries deeply mirrored fields and crisp frosted devices, while the 1998-S SMS Matte Finish piece shows a uniform satiny sheen across both fields and devices with no cameo contrast at all. Coins offered as one finish but bearing the other are routinely misattributed in raw sales, and PCGS and NGC both grade them as distinct issues. Verify finish before paying any premium.

For year-set collectors the regular 1998-S clad proof is a low-cost acquisition in PR69 DCAM with original Proof Set packaging still widely available. The premium sits at PR70 DCAM and remains modest by absolute numbers, since modern proof quality control produced flawless coins as a routine output. The companion 1998-S Silver Proof, struck in 90% silver, runs separately for collectors building the silver-set series; the 1998-S SMS Matte Finish piece sits on its own track at meaningfully higher price levels. A careful buyer should read the slab insert or the variety designation closely on every 1998 Kennedy proof because three distinct San Francisco issues exist for the year and they catalog and price separately. For the broader story of the modern proof program and the series' production arc, see the Kennedy Half Dollar series history.
