About this coinHistory

The 2002-D Kennedy half is Denver's debut in the modern mint-set-only era. Denver delivered 2,500,000 pieces, the lowest Denver Kennedy mintage of the entire post-1971 clad run up to that point and a figure that tracks the 2002 Mint Set production count almost exactly. The remaining small balance covers direct bag and roll orders sold by the Mint to collectors. Not one 2002-D Kennedy reached banks for commercial distribution. The compositional spec stayed the post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse. The dramatic mintage drop from 19.5 million in 2001 to 2.5 million in 2002 is the visible numerical signature of the policy change.

Strike quality on the 2002-D runs a step above any circulation-issued Denver Kennedy from the prior decade. Mint-set production handling treats each piece more carefully: dies are pulled before terminal wear, and finished coins never see commercial bag-and-sorter abuse. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear consistently come up sharp. Contact marks on the high cheek and jaw, the perennial Kennedy grade-cap, are noticeably milder because the coin sits in protective cellophane from the moment it leaves the production line. A 2002-D showing actual circulation wear is a broken-mint-set casualty, not a coin that participated in commerce. Authentication for this composition is straightforward; the working concern is distinguishing a clean original mint-set example from a cleaned or polished one being offered as Mint State raw.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the 2002-D is unavoidable and inexpensive, with the acquisition path mirroring the 2002-P: buy an intact 2002 Uncirculated Coin Set and extract the half, which typically grades MS66 or MS67 right out of the packaging. Bank-roll hunting is pointless because the coin never entered the banking system. PCGS and NGC populations cluster heavily at MS66 and MS67 because grading-service submissions on this issue are almost entirely mint-set extractions, the reverse of pre-2002 Denver issues whose populations are dominated by circulation-found coins. Prices on raw examples sit slightly above face. Anyone building a complete Denver Kennedy run treats the 2002-D as the structural threshold where every subsequent issue requires either a mint-set purchase or a small premium on a single-coin sale.
