The 2002-P Kennedy half opens the longest non-circulating stretch in U.S. coin history. Beginning with this issue the United States Mint stopped striking Kennedy halves for ordinary commerce and made them available only through the annual Uncirculated Coin Set and direct-sale bag and roll products. That policy ran nineteen years, through 2020, before the 2021 Yellen authorization restored limited circulation production. Philadelphia delivered just 3,100,000 pieces, a mintage that matches the 2002 Mint Set production count with the small remainder covering direct bag and roll orders. None of these coins entered banks or commercial distribution. Composition remained the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The P mintmark sits above the date; Gilroy Roberts's GR initials are at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG appears to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.
Strike quality on the 2002-P sits a noticeable step above the 1990s and earlier circulation issues. Mint-set production handling is more careful: fewer dies are run to terminal wear before replacement, and finished pieces never see commercial bagging or sorter belts. Hair detail above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers come up sharp on the typical 2002-P, and weak strikes are uncommon. The familiar Kennedy contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is also less aggressive because mint-set packaging insulates the coin from the moment it leaves the press. Any 2002-P showing circulation wear is post-mint handling damage from a broken-down mint set, not the result of actual commerce. Authentication for this composition is straightforward; the practical concern at this date is verifying that a piece offered as Mint State is not in fact a cleaned ex-mint-set coin.
For year-set collectors the 2002-P is unavoidable but inexpensive: the typical acquisition path is buying an intact 2002 Uncirculated Coin Set and extracting the half, which usually grades MS66 or MS67 right out of the cellophane. Bank-roll hunting is pointless here because the issue never reached banks. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 because the input stream to grading services is almost entirely mint-set extractions rather than circulation-found coins, the reverse of every Kennedy issued before 2002. Prices on raw examples track set value plus a small premium for the half alone.
