About this coinHistory

The 2003-D Kennedy half ties its Philadelphia counterpart at 2,500,000 pieces exactly, the second consecutive year of mint-set-only production and the first year both facilities matched mintages to the single piece. That symmetry is the visible fingerprint of the post-2002 arrangement: a single Mint Set production count drives both P and D output, the small additional balance covers direct bag and roll customers, and nothing leaves either facility for ordinary banking distribution. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse. The Denver facility's traditional half-step strike advantage over Philadelphia carries forward into the 2003 mint-set production run.

Strike quality on the 2003-D is consistently strong because mint-set production handling treats each piece carefully. Dies are rotated before terminal wear, finished coins skip commercial bag and sorter handling, and the protective cellophane wrap arrives as soon as the coin leaves the press. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical 2003-D, and the perennial contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild because the coin never sees commercial abuse. A 2003-D circulating with pocket wear came out of a busted mint set, not the banking system. Authentication for this composition is routine: verify a sharp D mintmark and the layered cupronickel rim under magnification. The working concern is separating an original cellophane-fresh piece from a cleaned ex-mint-set coin offered as Mint State raw.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the 2003-D is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the now-standard mint-set extraction path. Buy the intact 2003 Uncirculated Coin Set and pull the half, which typically grades MS66 or MS67 from the cellophane. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the coin never entered banks. PCGS and NGC populations on the 2003-D cluster heavily at MS66 and MS67 because the submission stream is almost entirely mint-set extractions. Prices on raw examples sit just above face value. For anyone building a complete Denver Kennedy run the matching 2.5-million mintage with the 2003-P is the date to remember; no other Kennedy year shows exact P-D mintage parity.
