The small bump comes entirely from collector demand at the direct-sale level; nothing about the production policy changed. The half remained a non-circulating product available only through the annual Uncirculated Coin Set and direct-sale bag and roll programs. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The P mintmark sits above the date; Gilroy Roberts's GR initials are at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG appears to the right of the eagle's tail feathers on the heraldic reverse.

Strike quality on the 2004-P holds the high standard set across the early mint-set-only years. Production dies are pulled before terminal wear, finished pieces skip the bag-and-sorter abuse that dominated pre-2002 grading caps, and the cellophane wrap arrives almost immediately. Hair detail above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers come up sharp on the typical 2004-P. The familiar Kennedy contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is milder than on circulation-issue Kennedys of any prior era. Counterfeiting is a non-issue at this composition. Authentication is routine for the cupronickel clad: verify a genuine reeded edge and the layered rim under magnification. The practical concern is identifying coins that have been cleaned out of mint sets and offered as Mint State raw, a problem that grows with each year of the mint-set-only stretch.

For year-set collectors the 2004-P is an inexpensive placeholder acquired through the standard mint-set extraction path: purchase the intact 2004 Uncirculated Coin Set and pull the half, which typically grades MS66 or MS67 from the cellophane. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing. PCGS and NGC populations cluster heavily at MS66 and MS67 because the submission stream is almost entirely mint-set extractions. Prices on raw examples sit just above face value. A small but steady collector audience focuses specifically on the 2002-2010 mint-set-only stretch because that nineteen-year window is a discrete numismatic episode within the Kennedy series, and a clean date-and-mint run of those years carries a meaningful structural story even at common-date pricing.
