About this coinHistory

The 2005-D Kennedy half is the regular business-strike entry for Denver and must be distinguished from the separately catalogued 2005-D Satin Finish piece that launched the new Satin Finish Mint Set program in the same year. The two issues use different finishes, catalog as different coins, and price independently of each other. The regular 2005-D came out of the standard 2005 Uncirculated Coin Set in conventional brilliant uncirculated finish at 3,800,000 pieces, matching the Philadelphia output to the unit and reflecting parallel Mint Set production scheduling between the two facilities. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the regular 2005-D continues the Denver half-step edge over Philadelphia, with the eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear coming up sharp on the typical example. Dies are pulled before terminal wear, finished coins skip commercial bagging, and protective cellophane arrives immediately. The familiar contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild because no piece ever sees the bag-and-sorter handling that historically suppressed Kennedy grades. The crucial authentication point at this date is finish identification, identical in importance to the 2005-P situation: the regular 2005-D shows a standard brilliant uncirculated surface, while the Satin Finish 2005-D shows a uniform matte-like sheen across fields and devices. The two are easy to confuse at first glance, and raw sales misattribute them routinely. Read the slab insert or variety attribution on any certified piece before paying a premium.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the regular 2005-D is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2005 Uncirculated Coin Set, with the Satin Finish piece pursued separately through the Satin Finish Mint Set when a collector wants both. Raw examples sell just above face value, MS66 and MS67 examples carry small premiums, and MS68 is effectively condition-rare. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never entered banks. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions. Anyone building a Denver date run through the 2002-2010 mint-set-only stretch should treat the 2005 entries as a two-coin year, with both the regular and the Satin Finish 2005-D required for completion.
