About this coinHistory

The 2006-D Kennedy half is the regular business-strike Denver issue for the year and must be kept separate from the 2006-D Satin Finish piece that catalogues independently as part of the second-year Satin Finish Mint Set program. The regular 2006-D came out of the standard 2006 Uncirculated Coin Set in conventional brilliant uncirculated finish at 2,000,000 pieces, the lowest single-mint Kennedy mintage of the 2002-2010 stretch and 400,000 below the Philadelphia figure for the same year. The two-million count tracks the slightly reduced 2006 Mint Set order volume combined with Denver-specific scheduling. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The D mintmark sits above the date, to the right of Kennedy's neck truncation. Gilroy Roberts's GR initials remain at the truncation and Frank Gasparro's FG sits to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the regular 2006-D continues the Denver edge over Philadelphia that runs across the mint-set-only stretch. The eagle's chest feathers and Kennedy's hair above the ear come up sharp on the typical example, dies are rotated before terminal wear, and cellophane packaging prevents the commercial bag-and-sorter handling that historically capped Kennedy grades. The familiar contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild on most pieces. As with the 2005 issues, the most consequential authentication point at this date is finish identification: the regular 2006-D shows a standard brilliant uncirculated surface, while the Satin Finish 2006-D shows a uniform matte-like sheen across fields and devices. The two are routinely misattributed in raw transactions, and PCGS and NGC grade them as separate issues that price independently. Verify finish before paying any premium.

For year-set and Denver-set collectors the regular 2006-D is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2006 Uncirculated Coin Set, with the Satin Finish piece pursued separately through the Satin Finish Mint Set when a collector wants both. The 2-million mintage is the lowest single-mint Kennedy figure of the early mint-set-only stretch and bears noting, though prices on raw examples remain just above face value because supply still comfortably exceeds collector demand at this stage of the series. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the coin never entered banks. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions, with MS68 condition-rare. The 2006-D rounds out a clean five-year arc through the early mint-set-only stretch and pairs cleanly with the 1999-D through 2001-D circulation issues for collectors tracking the transition.
