About this coinHistory

The 2006-P Kennedy half is the regular business-strike Philadelphia issue for the year and should be distinguished from the separately catalogued 2006-P Satin Finish piece that came through the Satin Finish Mint Set program. The Satin Finish issues continued in the second year of the new format, and the two 2006 Philadelphia entries catalog and price independently. The regular 2006-P came out of the standard 2006 Uncirculated Coin Set in conventional brilliant uncirculated finish at 2,400,000 pieces, a 1.4-million-coin pullback from the 2005 figure and the lowest 2006-era Philadelphia mintage of the mint-set-only stretch. The drop tracks lower Mint Set order volume for the calendar year. Composition stayed the standard post-1971 clad recipe of 75% copper, 25% nickel outer layers bonded to a pure copper core, 11.34 g at 30.6 mm with a reeded edge. The P mintmark sits above the date; Gilroy Roberts's GR initials are at the truncation of Kennedy's neck and Frank Gasparro's FG appears to the right of the eagle's tail feathers.

Strike quality on the regular 2006-P holds the mint-set-only era standard. Dies are pulled before terminal wear, finished coins skip commercial handling, and cellophane packaging arrives immediately. Hair detail above the ear and the eagle's chest feathers come up sharp on the typical 2006-P, with weak strikes uncommon. The familiar contact-mark cluster on the high cheek and jaw is mild because the coin never sees commercial bag-and-sorter abuse. The crucial authentication point at this date is finish identification, the same situation that began in 2005: the regular 2006-P shows a standard brilliant uncirculated surface, while the Satin Finish 2006-P shows a uniform matte-like sheen across fields and devices. The two are routinely confused in raw sales, and certified pieces require a careful read of the slab insert before any premium is paid. PCGS and NGC grade the two as distinct issues.

For year-set collectors the regular 2006-P is a low-cost placeholder acquired through the standard 2006 Uncirculated Coin Set, with the Satin Finish piece pursued separately through the Satin Finish Mint Set when a collector wants both. The lower 2.4-million mintage makes the regular 2006-P modestly scarcer than the 2005 or 2004 issues, though prices on raw examples remain just above face value with small premiums at MS66 and MS67. Bank-roll hunting produces nothing because the issue never reached banks. PCGS and NGC populations cluster at MS66 and MS67 from mint-set extractions, with MS68 condition-rare. For anyone building a complete date run through the mint-set-only stretch the lower mintage is worth noting but not worth chasing at a premium, because supply still comfortably exceeds collector demand.
